First, you'll chat with Children's Librarian Nicole Birnbaum. She'll ask a few questions, and then together, you'll decide which available date would be best for your presentation. During the entire month of June, we have two programs each week.
Wednesdays at 3P: All ages (generally attended by children up to age 12 and their families)
Thursdays at 3P: Teens (13-17)
Understanding a typical summer-reading program schedule will help you plan your presentation. You'll find a sample program listed below.
2:30P Presenter arrives, briefly connects with the children's librarian, meets the summer-reading interns; begins setting up for program
2:50-3:05 Children/young people begin arriving; they visit the touch table and work on a craft
3:05-3:20 Children's librarian reads a story
3:20-3:45 Presenter shares his/her presentation
3:45-4:00 Children's librarian (or presenter) leads a game, activity, or craft
4:00-4:10 Attendees mingle for a bit and then leave; presenter leaves
4:10-5:30 Children's librarian and summer-reading interns break down, clean up, and set up for next event
Q: I don't really know how to lead a presentation, but I still want to share my skills/talent. What can I do?
A: Thanks for wanting to help! Rather than taking on the responsibility of "leading," you can do a Q&A style presentation. You'll work with our children's librarian to come up with a few questions, and she can "interview" you. All you have to do is answer questions and showcase your talent.
Q: Is there anything I need to bring with me?
A: We like to provide a "touch table" for the kiddos, so they can have a tactile, sensory experience. We lay the items on a table and the kids can pick them up and touch them. If you have something related to your presentation that the kids can touch and pick up, please bring it along. It doesn't need to be anything fancy. Kids just love to touch stuff! Other than that, when you work with Nicole to plan out your presentation, y'all can decide if there's anything else you need to bring.
